If you ever wondered (I did before) how does the personal statement look like, which could get you to top universities here is one. I am not saying it is perfect or that you should copy it. I am sure somebody in your circle is currently searching for one as inspiration. Well, to be honest, I just wrote about myself focusing on the academic performance and to the field I wish to study. That's all. Honesty and integrity is the key. (and proof read it with your student counselor).
Personal statement
Notable party leaders fighting for the vox populi during the day, while
their nightlife represents immoral shadows. Democratic leaders sponsored
by oligarchs; business agenda created to benefit a privileged few. This
reflection of my dissatisfaction with the political landscape in my
home country Slovakia has increased my ambition to become an academic in
Social Science. I wish to better understand how economics influences
politicians' decision-making and the cause of corruption through
studying international relations.
My interest in politics was sparked by my first internship. I was
responsible for the back-office operations at the Indian Chamber of
Commerce in the Slovak Republic. I have worked closely with the
president of the Chamber, Mr. Rakesh Taurani, who hired me, and the
former Slovak ambassador to India, Egypt, and China Mr. Zigmund Bertok.
This was a wonderful experience; I learned the beauty of negotiation in
the political field, to improve my critical thinking, and to solve any
task that was needed. Furthermore, it was also my first insight to the
many different areas of government corruption. For example, how high
state figures are known for money laundering, or networking contacts for
illegitimate gain. Although those are only allegations, I started to
see how numerous party leaders are less than honest and try only fill
their pockets. It fed my curiosity and made me continue to interest
about the topic more.
The greatest experience for me and one that highlights my hard work are,
the several trips to India with the Slovak member companies to Indian
Chamber. My job was to take meeting minutes from different appointments
with generals or state ministers to later present them to the president
of the Chamber. This is where my research and public speaking became a
strength. To ask the right question related to the issue, I had to be
knowledgeable about the topics being discussed. Joining debates between
the important figures has given me skills I can confidently apply during
my bachelor's studies. It was an amazing insight into how global
affairs contribute to the well-being of a country.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading books covering Czechoslovakia's recent
history of democratic changes in society and the role of leaders. For
my big project at my American high school, my main source was a book
called "Mečiar a Mečiarizmus" by Marián Leško. I wrote a research paper
covering how significant Vladimir Mečiar was in the development of the
post-communist Slovak state. I found this intriguing in two ways: first,
how two countries can separate without a war; second, a transition from
corporate planning approach to liberal democracy with the market
economy in the middle of the EU. I must acknowledge that he managed the
separation without a bloody war, however, former Prime Minister Mečiar
is a great example of oligarchs and mafia, setting the groundwork for
future corruption. I also like to be involved in the community.
In 2020, I organised a charity clothing bazaar. The point was to donate
the money earned to an orphanage to make a better environment for the
kids who do not have the privileges of family. I faced challenges that
could ruin the whole operation, but with the best team around me, we
brainstormed new ideas and solved inconveniences within one session.
Being the leader of the event was an incredible journey I have
undertaken. It further developed my passion to become a hard-working
woman. My 10 years spent training hard on a tennis court and winning
many national tournaments, only supports my ambitions, whether in
school, life, or work.
I wish to continue my education in such a dynamic field because the
options offered by social sciences feed both my interest and analytical
thinking. I will also have the chance to meet like-minded people who
share my passion for solving political issues. My motivation, and
ability to acquire new information will guide me as I learn more complex
aspects of the subject.
